Volunteer Opportunities
How can I volunteer?
-
Assist Ms. Dorian Dugger, our Garden Coordinator, in creating beautiful gardens space for the children to work, learn and grow! You can support the Garden Program by volunteering for the Fall and Spring Plant Sales, Garden Work Saturdays, and Garden Work Mornings. You can also feel free to reach out to Dorian directly to see if she could use assistance of any kind.
-
Assist our Library by volunteering for the Book Fair and Library Wednesdays. Every Wednesday morning, students from various programs come to check out books. Our Library volunteer helps scan checked out books into the system as our librarian, Ms. Evelyn, assists children as they explore all the library has to offer.

The Class Representative is a core member of our community. As we educate our children on how to be an engaged member of their community, we show them by example through the micro community of the classroom. Our Class Representative helps host community events, coordinates volunteers and supply donations as desired by the Guides, coordinates birthday and holiday gifts for the Guides, and sends out pre-written communications on behalf of school wide organizing endeavors.

Winston-Salem Montessori School is proud to offer the unique experience of community connection. Throughout the year we have community experts visit our classrooms and showcase their professional expertise or hobbyist skills. If you have a skill or area of knowledge you would like to share with our community, a Community Expert Volunteer role may be a good fit!

We always have deep gratitude for our Open House Ambassadors. During a weekend Open House, they join their student’s guide in their classroom. As guests tour the campus, conversations and questions begin to flow. Our Open House Ambassadors speak on their experience as a Parent/Caregiver in our community and share stories of how they’ve seen their child grow. There is a special place in our heart for our Open House Ambassadors!

Our Volunteer Committee meets once a month. They serve as a brainstorming committee. Their main focus is appreciation. Some of their previous generosity has included replenishing the faculty snack cabinet, hosting a faculty holiday party, planning an amazing Appreciation Week and more!

This role is great for the community member who would like to spend time on campus immediately after morning drop off. This role pushes carts of lunchboxes into the kitchen, labels the lunchboxes, and organizes them into the refrigerators. A perk of this role is having the opportunity to observe your child’s class! After lunchboxes are put away, the children are settled into their morning work cycle. Come by the front desk and tell them you’d like to observe. We can turn the hallway lights off and you will be able to view the classroom from our observation window.

Throughout the school year, our WSM families and faculty chat during our Community Meeting. We ask a member of our community to volunteer as the facilitator and a second community member to volunteer as the minutes/note taker. By having a community member volunteer for these roles, it helps center our WSM families as the leaders of our Community Meeting.

Once a year we host a Community Picnic in the fall. Our volunteers are welcome to help coordinating set up, clean up, entertainment for the children, food and more! When the occasion arises, we also host a Silent Auction in the spring. Volunteer are welcome to assist.
In between school events, volunteers are more than welcome to host play dates off campus! You are welcome to use the WSM Community Facebook Group to invite our community.
We pride ourselves on providing our students with consistency and an intentionally planned routine. Because of this culture, we ask volunteers to coordinate with faculty to see how they can best volunteer within our community. We cannot accommodate volunteers who arrive on the day and wish to volunteer in the classroom. However, if a family member or friend wishes to be a guest as a community expert or assist our Guides as needed, they are welcome to coordinate with our Volunteer Coordinator and Guides.
