LE March Newsletter

Dear LE One Families,

We can hardly believe that February has come and gone. What a wonderful month the community has had together. We continue to grow socially, emotionally, and academically as a community and individually. The warmer weather has brought about the promise of Spring, and our community has taken a great shine to the warm days. The children have been interested in their outdoor environment. Many have spent their work cycles outside bird watching, exploring their botany lessons with the nature around them. One child created a worm habitat, inspiring many community members to learn more about worms.

February is a special month in LE One because it marks the official start of the Science Fair! Preparing for the Science Fair is a huge undertaking; the children work hard through their work cycles. They are responsible for so much work, and it is a true honor to guide them through each step of the process. The Science Fair results are about more than just the experiments and the understanding of why certain things happen. Still, it is also about understanding how to navigate group work and work together as a team. The community learns about the importance of meeting their needs and their group's needs. We also talk about when it is appropriate to compromise and when to speak up for what we want. The excitement is infectious, and we look forward to welcoming the children's families to celebrate their hard work.

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, the Piedmont Opera came to perform an opera for the children! As part of this, the children learnt about the history of the opera and the different parts of an opera. They were fascinated to learn that opera singers do not use a microphone when performing. We look forward to welcoming the Piedmont Opera next year.

February is nationally recognized as Black History Month. This vital part of our history should be studied and explored monthly in LE One. So we will continue learning about different scientists, painters, inventors, and musicians throughout the year; while exploring history. If you have any Black men or women, who have inspired you, please let me know! I would love the opportunity to put together a lesson to share with our community.

February was a busy month for the LE One community. I have been working towards building a strong going-out culture, and it was so wonderful to help seven children plan their going-outs. The children are excited about these lessons, and many have been thinking hard about where they may want to go in the near future.

I must extend a very special thank you, to Miss Olivia, for chaperoning all our going-outs. Our children are thrilled to have you be a part of their experience.

On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, two children visited the local grocery store to buy materials for their traditional Japanese cake. As part of the going out, the children learnt about money and the importance of budgeting.

On Friday, February 17, 2023, two children visited Zootastic Park in Lake Norman. They went to observe giraffes as part of their research. They have inspired our community members to think about visiting the zoo, as well.

Our final going out this month occurred on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Four children visited Salem Dental & Associates, where they interviewed a dentist on dental hygiene as part of our health curriculum. With their answers, we plan to create a whole group lesson for our community on the importance of dental hygiene.

As we move into March, I cannot wait to see what incredible work and growth every child of LE One will undertake. It truly is an honor and inspiration to be with your children.
