Children's House

The Children’s House Program is designed for children ages 3-6 years old. Each class consists of up to 25 children with 2 teachers, a Montessori-certified lead guide and an assistant.

In a Children’s House classroom, children work at their own pace within a meticulously-prepared environment and with the nurturing guidance of the teachers. The multi-age setting provides opportunities for children to learn from and with each other.  Social skills and a sense of community are natural outgrowths of this multi-age setting.  Fully accessible Montessori materials promote hands-on exploration, discovery and mastery and are focused in 5 areas: practical life, sensorial, language arts, math and cultural (science, geography, art and music). Our Spanish teacher helps the childen develop an ear for spanish, speaking almost exclusively in spanish as the teacher works with the children.  Each child experiences 2, 1-month intervals of mini-Spanish immersions during the morning work cycle.  See below for more details about the Children's House curriculum.

Each Children's House classroom has an observation window which provides parents a peek into their child's world.  Our parents absolutely love this feature.  It's not often that parents get to watch their child without the child knowing.  It's very comforting for a parent to drop-off their child in the morning, spend a few moments observing through the window, then move throughout their day knowing that their child is safe and happy at school!   Another unique feature of our classrooms is our outdoor patio space which the children like to call their 'backyards.'  It's an extension of the classrom environments, creating places for the children to enjoy a natural setting.

During the morning, children engage in individual or small group activities, enjoy a snack with a friend, participate in fun community activities and explore during unstructured outside play. Our newly installed rolling hill is a favorite playground activity.  In our full-day program, children also eat lunch with their community, then nap/rest (usually 3-4 year olds) or continue their learning in the classroom in the afternoon (older 4’s-6 year olds).

Two Programs Are Offered (all 5 days/week, Monday-Friday)

Children’s House Half-Day Program (8:30-12 pm): ages 3-4

Children’s House Full-Day Program (8:30-3 pm): ages 3-6

Note: All kindergarten-age children attend our full-day program.

Our Sunrise/Sunset Program is available for parents who need care for their children before or after the school day.

The 5 areas of focus in a Children's House classroom are:
  • Practical Life – Develops a child's independence (care of self and care of environment) and fine motor skills.  Grace and courtesy lessons promote kindness, collaboration and respect.
  • Sensorial – Sharpens the child's senses and introduces children to math concepts in a sensorial, hands-on way.
  • Mathematics – Using manipulatives, builds upon a child's previous sensorial experiences which leads to internalizing concepts of number, symbol, sequence and operations.
  • Language Arts – Deepens a child's understanding of phonemic awareness.  When a child understands that words are made up of sounds, multi-sensory hands on materials (e.g., sandpaper letters, moveable alphabet) bring the child to reading mastery.  Multiple materials lead to the child's developing fine motor control, as preparation for handwriting.
  • Cultural – Broadens the child's understanding of the world around them through exposure to geography, history, science, music, art, and different cultures.

Upon completion of the Children's House Program, children transition to our Lower Elementary Program.
